Biographical Sketch

Dr. WenZhan Song is Georgia Power Mickey A. Brown Professor in Computer Engineering and Founding Director of the Center for Cyber-Physical Systems (CCPS) at the University of Georgia. He directs the SensorWeb Research Laboratory with the research focus on sensor data analytics and security, sensor networks and data infrastructures. Dr. Song’s lab invented a series of non-invasive sensing technology for the health and security monitoring of humans, animals, machines and infrastructures, driven by the convergence of AI, data science, and advanced sensing and networking technologies. His lab invented the first “subsurface camera” for real-time subsurface imaging, which senses the reflected and refracted seismic signals and computes the 3D subsurface imaging in real-time and continuously and has been adopted in hazard mitigations, energy exploration, planetary explorations and infrastructure security. Building on the advanced seismic sensing, his lab further invents a series of continuous contactless health monitoring technologies for humans and animals, ultimately ushering in a new era of predictive and preventative healthcare. For instance, BedDot, attached underneath a bed, senses micro-seismograms from heartbeats and movements and estimates sleep activities, vital signs and cardiovascular dynamics. CageDot, placed under an animal cage, monitors animal activity patterns and vital signs. FloorDot, placed on the floor, senses micro-seismograms generated by foot steps and other activities and identifies the activities of daily living. Delving into the domain of cyber-physical security, his lab creates spatio-temporal sensor webs meticulously engineered to collect and analyze multi-modal sensor signals emanating from electrical networks and cyber networks. This approach simultaneously secures and monitors the health of devices, machinery, and critical infrastructures, fortifying them against potential threats and ensuring optimal operation. To address the critical needs of secure and sharable sensor data infrastructure, his lab builds the first zero-trust and traceable data infrastructure for secure and trustworthy sensor data storage, sharing and computing based on web3 and blockchain principles, promoting a new level of data ownership and transparency. These advancements have a far-reaching impact on healthcare, security, and infrastructure.

Dr. Song’s research was featured in national media and received numerous awards and recognitions including NSF CAREER Award, Outstanding Research Contribution Award, Chancellor Research Excellence Award, IEEE Mark Weiser Best Paper Award, and three times Most Promising Technology awards from industry. Dr. Song served as General Chair, TPC member and Associate Editor of the most prestigious conferences and journals at computer science and engineering, including IEEE INFOCOM, IEEE PERCOM, IEEE Internet of Things, ACM Transaction on Sensor Networks. He has a strong tracking record on leading multi-dsciplinary teams with numerous grants from the NSF, NIH, NASA, USGS, DOE, USDA, DOD and industry. He also holds the courtesy appointment in computer science and statistics at UGA.

The University of Georgia, founded in 1785, is the flagship university of the State of Georgia in USA. It is consistently ranked top 50 among all U.S. universities and top 20 among all U.S. public universities according to the U.S. News & World Report rankings.
Motto

  • If you think something is hard, likely the way you think makes it harder.
  • Take daily life as a lifetime interest, because that is the life.
  • Helping others is helping yourself. If a dream can be achieved alone, it is too small.
